Instructions for Use
Whether the dial caliper is used correctly directly affects its accuracy; the following requirements should be observed during use:
1. Before use, wipe the dial caliper clean, then slide the frame along the scale; the movement should be smooth and free, with no sticking, loosening, or binding. When the frame is secured with the locking screw, the reading should remain unchanged.
2. Check the zero position. Gently slide the vernier scale until the measuring faces of the two jaws are brought into contact, and verify that there is no noticeable light leakage. Ensure that the dial pointer points to “0,” and confirm that the main scale and the vernier scale are aligned at the zero mark.
3. During measurement, gently push and pull the slide to bring the measuring jaws into light contact with the surface of the part being measured, then lightly rock the dial caliper to ensure good contact. When using a dial caliper, since it lacks a built-in force‑control mechanism, the operator must rely on tactile feedback; avoid applying excessive force to prevent compromising measurement accuracy.
4. When measuring external dimensions, first open the movable jaws of the dial caliper so that the workpiece can be freely inserted between the two jaws. Then, bring the fixed jaw into contact with the work surface and manually move the slide until the movable jaw is tightly pressed against the workpiece surface. Note: (1) During measurement, the end faces of the workpiece must not be tilted relative to the jaws. (2) Do not attempt to force the jaws onto the part by using a jaw spacing smaller than the workpiece dimension.
5. When measuring internal diameters, first spread the two jaws apart to a distance slightly smaller than the dimension being measured, then insert the caliper into the hole. Next, adjust the moving frame so that the inner jaws make tight contact with the inner surface of the workpiece; at this point, you can take the reading. Note: The measuring jaws of the vernier caliper must be positioned at the diameter of the holes at both ends of the workpiece, and they must not be tilted.
6. The measuring faces of the jaws on a dial caliper come in various shapes. When taking measurements, select the appropriate type based on the geometry of the part being measured. For example, use the external jaws to measure length and external dimensions; use the internal jaws to measure internal diameters; and use the depth gauge to measure depth.
7. When taking a reading, hold the dial caliper horizontally, ensuring your line of sight is perpendicular to the scale face. Then, carefully identify the indicated position according to the reading procedure to obtain an accurate measurement, thereby avoiding reading errors caused by an oblique viewing angle.
