(2) Decimal portion: The number of divisions on the vernier scale that align with a particular division on the main scale, multiplied by the instrument’s least count, gives the decimal part in millimeters. If no vernier division exactly coincides with a main‑scale division—instead falling between two values—one may read the average of the corresponding least‑count increments.
