Salt‑spray testing is particularly well suited for detecting discontinuities in certain metallic, organic, anodized, and conversion coatings.

1. The neutral salt spray test (NSS) is applicable to metals and their alloys, metallic coatings (anodic and cathodic), conversion coatings, anodized coatings, and organic coatings on metallic materials.
2. The acetate-spray test (AASS) is particularly suitable for testing decorative coatings of copper–nickel–chromium or nickel–chromium; it has also been found to be applicable to anodic coatings on aluminum.
3. The Copper-Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray Test (CASS) is suitable for testing decorative coatings of copper–nickel–chromium or nickel–chromium; it has also been found to be applicable to anodic coatings on aluminum.
4. Test method for high-concentration sulfur dioxide exposure;
Note: Because the corrosion process is influenced by numerous factors—such as the formation of protective films—that can vary significantly depending on the specific conditions encountered, there is seldom a direct correlation between resistance to salt spray and resistance to other media. Consequently, the test results obtained should not be taken as an absolute guide to the corrosion‑resistance performance of the tested metallic materials in all possible service environments. Similarly, the performance of different materials under test conditions should not be regarded as a definitive indicator of their corrosion‑resistance in actual applications.
