Description
Product Introduction:
For the determination of the maximum dry density of non-cohesive, freely draining soils, the compaction test often yields a bimodal or featureless curve, indicating that this method is no longer the most suitable for such soils. Moreover, the “maximum dry density” obtained by compaction frequently falls short of the values derived from vibration‑compaction tests. Both the British Standard BS 1377 and the Swedish Standard SS 027109 prescribe the surface vibration compactor method for highly permeable soils. In China, the Ministry of Transport’s industry standard “Highway Geotechnical Test Procedures” (JTGE 40‑2007), drawing on experimental research conducted by the Highway Science Research Institute of the Ministry of Transport, has added both this method and the vibration‑table method as fundamental procedures for determining the maximum dry density of non‑cohesive coarse‑grained and gravelly soils. The surface vibration compactor method closely simulates vibration‑rolling conditions, is easy to operate, and prevents sample segregation during vibration compaction. By contrast, the vibration‑table method is more complex to implement and tends to cause sample segregation during vibration compaction. Accordingly, JTGE 40‑2007 recommends giving priority to the surface vibration compactor method; furthermore, this method can also be employed in preparing specimens for triaxial tests, permeability tests, concrete material tests, and subgrade material tests involving coarse‑grained soils.
