The BLTHV‑5, 10, 30, and 50 ZXY semi‑automatic Vickers hardness testers are primarily used for measuring micro‑ and thin‑section specimens as well as brittle materials. By selecting various accessories or upgrading different components, they can be widely applied to a broad range of metals—including ferrous and non‑ferrous alloys, castings, and alloyed materials—along with metal microstructures, surface‑treated layers, electroplated coatings, hardened layers (such as oxides, various diffusion layers, and coating deposits), heat‑treated samples, carburized specimens, quenched parts, and minute regions containing phase inclusions. They are also suitable for testing brittle, hard non‑metallic materials such as glass, agate, synthetic gemstones, and ceramics. These instruments are particularly well suited for determining hardness gradient profiles in large batches of workpieces and for performing localized hardness measurements at specified locations. Equipped with an automated translation stage driven by a built‑in stepper motor and controlled via mouse clicks, they offer multiple operating modes, high positioning accuracy, excellent repeatability, rapid travel speeds, and outstanding operational efficiency.

1. Introduction

The semi‑automatic Vickers hardness tester integrates cutting‑edge technologies such as optical imaging, mechanical displacement, electronic control, digital imaging, image analysis, and computer processing. It uses a host computer to control both the Vickers indenter and the automated stage, digitizing the hardness indentation and displaying it on the screen. By employing automatic and manual readings, it accurately measures the microhardness of metals and certain non‑metallic materials, as well as the depth of hardened layers, the thickness of coating films, and the distance between two points. It can also capture surface topography and produce fixed‑magnification prints. This system breaks away from conventional hardness testing methods, delivering fully automated, high‑precision, and highly repeatable measurements, making it an essential tool for materials analysis.

2. Composition

The computer host controls the hardness tester’s operations and receives its feedback via an RS‑232 serial port; it also interfaces with the stage control box, which in turn drives the automated sample stage and relays relevant data. The optical signal from the indentation produced by the Vickers hardness tester is captured by a digital camera and displayed on the computer monitor, after which the Vickers hardness value is determined through automatic or manual readings.

Text and Image Report

Automatically records measurement data, generates hardness–depth curves, and saves or prints both the hardness–depth curves and all indentation measurement values; also saves or prints indentation images along with the current indentation hardness value.

Inspection reports can be customized according to user requirements. Using data‑processing software, the hardened‑layer depth values obtained from continuous measurements of a specimen can be displayed in tabular form. The system can export various measurement data, including D1 and D2 values, hardness tables, hardened‑layer depths, as well as maximum, average, and minimum values; it also displays and outputs images of each indentation. Hardness values, hardness charts, hardened‑layer depth profiles, and embedded images can all be flexibly edited in Word or Excel, enabling the generation and printing of test reports that incorporate statistical analyses and hardened‑layer depth curves, with options to save the report in Word or Excel format. Additionally, observed microstructural images of the sample can be printed and saved, directly revealing the microstructure of both the indentations and the surrounding matrix.

Nusselt measurement The indenter can be replaced to enable automated Knoop hardness measurements.
Automatic Loading Worktable

The system allows automatic point selection by clicking anywhere on the interface, enables setting the starting position of a straight line and defining random movement positions, and permits 8‑directional control of the automated X‑Y stage via mouse. It supports speed adjustment, automatic homing, and free coordinate zeroing.

The software system enables programmable control of the automated stage’s movement, offering 14 operating modes:
