The Ford cup is manufactured in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards for paints and raw materials—ASTM D 1200, D 333, and D 365—and serves as a convenient viscometer for measuring the viscosity of inks, coatings, paints, and other materials with relatively low to moderate viscosity. It is precision‑crafted from high‑quality aluminum, featuring a small orifice at the base and a capacity of approximately 100 mL. The Ford cup determines the viscosity of a sample by measuring the time it takes for a specified volume of the sample to flow out through the orifice at the bottom of the cup.
